WIP 2014 / JOURNEY THROUGH LOCAL INDUSTRY

As a candidate of Master of Arts, Taehun Ko pursued the manufacturing process to understand and be inspired by actual industry in the United Kingdom. He is always interested in communication with manufacturers in order to design products since he was in South Korea. In work-in-progress show 2014, Royal College of Art, he presented a seating object made out of 1mm mild steel looks like a saddle. This object is pressed and rolled to the shape for three-dimensional structure that people can sit on it. With several experiments and indirect research, he remind his own interests on delight of designing objects, and decided to visit the manufacturers around London. Series of his thesis project – A.P.B, E.M.S, L.S.F.C- are the results of this research that make him back to his original delightful moments of interaction with makers.

research project

“This project started with the research of established manufacturing process available in London. Local manufacturers who produce low-volume and small-scale objects offer huge potential for the designer. It is our roll to maximize this potential by understanding the processes they offer and create value by critical insight. Being from South Korea, this document identifies a small selection of London-based factories and their production processes, as seen from different cultural context. Offering an alternative way of sitting, Riding Seat introduces the motivation and starting point for my journey through local industry.”

Sometime, designers face the confliction between reality and imagination therefore when they design objects, the outcome can be resulted differently without the purposes. Making things by own hands is helping to understand and making a good solution. Taehun tried to make a unique seating object by raw and production method, which is broadly used in actual manufacturing industry. This seating object is motivation that making processes could stimulate designer’s creativity.
