E.M.S / Extreme Metal Spinning

Taehun Ko investigated on the metal spinning process, which is widely used for many domestic products. From single 330 mm diameter of aluminium disc, it can be transformed into a distinguishing part for construction of stool. Three identical parts were cut and welded together with certain angle in order to create ‘arch’ shape of the bottom structure. In result, E.M.S process creates super light and strong seat object.

In the beginning, metal spinning process generally uses the flat sheet of metal including steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper. Depends on the purpose of product, metal spinners start with various thickness and type of materials in order to create the shape. Taehun chose the aluminium sheet thanks to the light weight of material. 330 mm diameter aluminium sheet converted to the french-horn like leg. Three identical part are cut by band saw or water jet cutting. he investigated on the joint point in the previous study with actual sheet and 3D modelling since different cut section enhance the structure differently. With Solidworks simulation, he could calculate the force against the stool and strength of structure. Curved section combined and provide enough strength to sit.
