A.P.B / Aluminium Profile Bending

Aluminium profile is a popular material for the construction of the everyday objects that we barely notice. The extruded shapes are optimized to have the highest possible strength with the lowest possible amount of material. According to these good properties Taehun Ko experimented with this raw but highly standardized material in order to create a seat for domestic use. The bending process breaks free from the conventional limitations of the profile system whilst eliminating the weakness inherent to the standard joints. The continuous slots allow each component to be assembled after bending with simple tools. This positive opportunity of material use can be adopted into any objects that require the structure and strength like bent tube.  Also, thanks to the slot, ‘Ripstop nylon’ fabric attaches into the designed profile with rigid polypropylene sticks in order to create a sitting space.

Bending metal is broadly used production method in the industry. Section bending is one of those bending processes and in architecture field, it allow to create various composition including arches and window frames. Taehun Ko looked into this process and tried to drag to the other position with a potential. Aluminium extruded profile also is popular material for display and shelving thanks to the designed structure. It helps to easily assemble from a small unit to different big units like a modular system. However, its structural strength is quite weak due to the joint parts therefore He investigates on the method to be improved for potential uses in domestic environments. Profile bending process helps to reduce the joint points so A.P.B stool has only four joints in order to assemble. These points are considered not to be stressed as possible.

Because it has X shape of structure and bent profile, it has strong support against to the perpendicular weight stress even the profile is only 25 mm x 25 mm thickness. The joint method is universal and pre-made type which is already widely used. Moreover, I experimented to covering material for seating area. Among those materials, I was looking at a artificial fabric for the tent.  Ripstop nylon has less tension and enhanced surface strength-which is enhanced by the net pattern-. Simply using a thin plastic stick, it can be assembled inside of the groove of aluminium profile.
